There are dog obedience classes being run in every city, so if you can't teach your dog by yourself there is plenty of support available at any one of the available classes. Not only will you be training your dog you will be getting to be friends with him and getting him used to being around others.

Treats are a common way to teach your dog obedience; you can reward him with a treat when he obeys your command, or If he refuses to obey then he misses out on a treat. Shouting at your dog is not a good idea as it will make him fearful of you and you don't want that, you want to form a close relationship with him. Make friends with a dog and you will have a friend for ever.

When doing your basic dog training make sure that you conduct the lessons away from any diversions like sticks or bones that he may want to play with. Go to an empty field or park where there aren't any other people or animals. Tell your dog firmly that you want him to sit, then place one hand under his jaw and your other hand on his back near the tail bone, gently tilt his head up and push his rear end down, when he is in the sitting position tell him he's a good boy, then reward him with a treat.

After you have gone through this procedure several times your dog will obey your order and sit, because he realizes that by carrying out your orders he will be rewarded and also because he can see that you are pleased with his efforts. Ultimately your dog will comply with your commands automatically, and you can dispense with the treats.

Puppies are docile, lovable and inquisitive, so it is easy to make friends with them and teach them to behave in a proper manner.
