A Young Couple Appraises Their Irresponsible And Hazardous Drinking And Their Short And Long-Term Hopes, Aspirations, And Dreams

Frank and Linda have been seeing one another for four-and-a-half years. They met while taking the same human geography class at a small, country, liberal arts college located in the Southern part of the United States. While they were mainly good buddies at first, they eventually started to date when they were in their second year of college.

Since both of them came from very old-fashioned backgrounds, neither one of them drank very much beyond the testing stage when they first started to date. As the time passed by, nonetheless, they began to go to more happy hours, sorority and fraternity parties, keg parties, and football bashes. As a consequence, they over time began to drink increasingly more as they progressed in their relationship.

After they graduated, they both found employment in a medium size city that was located around fifty miles from their undergraduate college. Then they at long last decided to move in with one another.

With any momentous alteration in a person's life there is commonly something that starts the specific change in question. For Linda and Frank the notion of having children and buying a new house was this "vehicle for change." Stated more forcefully, for the first time in their lives, Linda and Frank started to critically evaluate their irresponsible and excessive drinking and the long term negative consequences of alcohol on their health. As an example, they began to wonder if they would ever experience an alcohol overdose due to their excessive and hazardous drinking.

Would their irresponsible drinking unfavorably affect their ability to have children? How would they be able to continue spending almost all of their money on drinking if they were to start saving for a new house?

From a different line of reasoning, even though neither one of them ever experienced alcohol poisoning, received a "drunk driving" arrest, or experienced alcohol poisoning symptoms, they realized that their heavy drinking was becoming a reality that they could not close their eyes to any longer. All of these inquiries undoubtedly indicated the same conclusion, namely that Frank and Linda needed to identify more completely with the fact that they couldn't continue their heavy drinking if their hopes, aspirations, and dreams were to be met.

Once they got to this conclusion, they advised their drinking friends about their their plans to start a family, about their goal of buying or building a new house, and about their marital plans. They also told their drinking pals that they still wanted to hang around with them but that they would be drinking in strict moderation from this point forward so that they could start to realize their future dreams, goals, and aspirations.

Much to their wonder, all of their pals expressed relief because they too had been reassessing their lives and concluded that their life-styles were too focused on drinking. They also realized that they would have to change significantly if they were to become more responsible and exhibit more consideration for their careers, their aspirations, and for their health in the next fifteen or twenty years.

After their frank discussion with their pals about their dreams, hopes, and aspirations, Frank and Linda actually started to have more meaningful relationships with all of their pals. The main reason for this was the fact that all of them had a similar state of mind regarding their irresponsible and abusive drinking and their short and long-term aspirations, goals, and plans.
